Who I am

My longtime journey to faith has lead me through a variety of spiritual landscapes. Perhaps the potholes and pinnacles I have encountered on my path can provide some perspective, or at least amusement, for others on a similar adventure.

Along my 60 plus year odyssey of seeking out spirit and faith I have meandered through the thoughts and practices of Catholicism, Atheism, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Taoism, just to name the main ones. And, although I met some very smart, devout and well spoken people in each of these belief systems I ended up with Christianity as my final destination. Christianity and the Bible have simply done the best job of answering the many unanswered question I kept encountering.

Even though Christianity was where I disembarked the soul train, the journey did not end there. Having arrived at the door of Christianity over 30 years ago I ‘ve been exploring the Christian experience ever since.

Much of the content of this blog relies on my observations and thought about scripture. Here is the first verse from which I will springboard :

In John 20:24-29 the Bible tells the story of the apostle Thomas being told of the appearance of Jesus after His resurrection.

Now Thomas, one of the 12 …was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into His side, I will never believe.” This is where we get the moniker, “Doubting Thomas”.

This is a fairly accurate description of my general outlook. I tend to question things a lot. In adopting a belief system I find it a hinderance. I know people in the Christian faith and others who seem to believe without the shadow of a doubt. Blind faith is an enviable commodity. It must be wonderful to believe without question, to go to sleep at night without a nagging query, to not be driven to writing blogs that provide a tool for examining your own feelings.

The upside of my disfunction is that I may, from time to time, bump into some thought, observation, or random idea that could prove useful for another spiritual adventurer.
