We were created to seek God. Acts 17:26-27, “And He made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward Him and find Him. Yet, He is actually not far from each one of us”.
The first takeaway from the above verse is that we were put on earth to seek God. I would posit that if we are seeking God with all our hearts we will find fulfillment in most of our other endeavors. Conversely, if we are not seeking God earnestly, nothing we do seems fulfilling.
But the part of the verse I find fascinating is the bit that says, “…and perhaps feel their way toward Him and find Him”. My acts of seeking God often seem like I’m feeling my way toward Him, as opposed to heading down a straight, clearly defined path. Even when I read the Bible, which some will say provides specific, unquestionable direction, even reading the specific, unquestionable direction of the Bible I find myself churning over phrases and concepts, looking for more depth, more detail. I sometimes feel illuminated but not elucidated. And then off I go feeling my way to a clearer understanding of God and His character. Its not just the Bible that initiates these forays into the misty regions of the mind. I have found that the most mundane objects and activities can spark a God seeking quest.
Even though the phrase “and perhaps feel their way toward Him” sounds rather nebulous, I get reassurance from the end of the sentence, “and find Him”. There are several passages in the Bible telling us that if we seek God with all our hearts we will find Him. Jeremiah 29:13 says, “You will seek Me and find Me, when you seek Me with all your heart”. Then, in Proverbs 8:17 we are told, “I love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently find me”. We are given scriptural assurance that seeking God is not a “snipe hunt”. If we are serious about wanting to know God He will make sure we find Him.
I also like the assurance in Acts 17, “Yet, He is actually not far from each of us”. Aside from the comfort I get from being perpetually close to God, I also find it true that I don’t have to look very far to find God. And I don’t have to be digging through dusty old theology books, or reading the Bible, or cloistered in a church to see God. In Philippians 4:8 we have a list of the obvious spots to look for God, “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things.” Clearly God can be found in all things good. But beyond that, the reflection of God can be seen in the most mundane things. A blade of grass, a motorcycle ride, the smile of a toddler, a kind word, all provide links to the glory of God and insights into His character. And as God appears to us in more obscure places our eyes learn to look deeper into the unremarkable to find the remarkable. Our minds are unsatisfied with taking the world at face value and we strive to peer beyond the surface to see the awesome Creator behind the obvious.
