Our winter and spring travel has made life hectic enough that it has been difficult for me to attend to posting. I apologize.
Among the many valuable instructions in the Bible is the admonition to seek wisdom and knowledge. And although we are told to seek God’s wisdom as in James 3:17 – “But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.” , Peter 3:18 – “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” Matthew 6:33 – “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness…”. we are also encouraged to gain knowledge in general. Proverbs 19:20 says, “Listen to advice and accept instruction, that you may gain wisdom in the future.”, 1 Kings 3:9 quotes King Solomon’s request of God – “Give Your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, that I may discern between good and evil…”.
As I read the above scriptures and others related to wisdom I understand that we are to seek the knowledge of God and Jesus Christ first. I think this is important because God’s wisdom precedes all other wisdom. Proverbs 9:10 says – “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom…”. I want to point out the second line of the following passage that provides insights into what “the fear of the Lord” means. I have included a healthy chunk of Proverbs 8 because I think it is important to get a clear picture of how the Bible explains wisdom.
Take a look at Proverbs 8:12 – 31, “I, wisdom, dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge and discretion. The fear of the Lord is to hate evil, pride and arrogance, and the evil way, and the perverse mouth I hate. Council is mine and sound wisdom: I am understanding, I have strength. By me kings reign and rulers decree justice. By me princes rule, and nobles, all the judges of the earth. I love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently will find me. Riches and honor are with me, enduring riches and righteousness. My fruit is better than gold, yes, than fine gold. And my reverence than choice silver. I travel the way of righteousness in the midst of the paths of justice that I may cause those who love me to inherit wealth, that I may fill their treasuries.
The Lord possessed me at the beginning of His way. Before His works of old. I have been established from everlasting, from the beginning, before there was ever an earth. When there were no depths I was brought forth: While as yet He had not made the earth or the fields, or the primal dust of the world. When He prepared the heavens, I was there, when He drew a circle on the face of the deep, when He established the clouds above, when He strengthened the fountains of the deep, when He assigned the to the sea its limit, so that the waters would not transgress His command, when He marked out the foundations of the earth, then I was beside Him as a master craftsman; And I was His delight, rejoicing always before Him, rejoicing in His inhabited world, and my delight was with the sons of men.”
In this post I have attempted to share a biblical perspective on the significance of wisdom and its power, as well as the importance of acquiring it. I try to keep most of my posts short, so I’m ending here. But I encourage you to read the next post on why the Bible’s version of wisdom should inform our point of view on acquiring wisdom.
