Among the primary existential questions we turn to belief systems to answer are:
- Is there a God?
- Where do we come from?
- Why are we here?
- Is there life after death?
Christianity addresses all these questions. At least it has for me. In the following few posts I will attempt to share my perspectives on the answers I have received through reading the Bible, listening to others who are a lot smarter than I, and the thoughts that my inspection/introspection provoked.
But first, lets take a look at why these questions are important to each of us, regardless of our belief systems.
- Is there a God? – Whether or not God exists informs our worldview, our behavior, how we treat others, how we treat ourselves, how we raise our children and a whole slew of other important day to day issues.
- Where do we come from? – If we believe we are merely animals, descended from primordial slime by way of apes, our self image and the way we see others is decidedly different from what it is if we see ourselves as the intentional creation of a Supreme Being who values us and has a plan that includes us.
- Why are we here? – Life is short. Those who believe that there is nothing beyond our present being, our present sensations, and our present need to survive and procreate, don’t really have much of a reason to strive and excel. A sense of purpose is a key component in experiencing life to the fullest. Psychology Today tells us that there is a connection between our sense of purpose and our physical health and overall quality of life.
- Is there life after death? – To a great extent, how we handle this question determines how we live our lives before death.
